Comparative study between Wilson and Mitchell metatarsal osteotomies for the treatment of hallux valgus in adults.

چکیده
Although Mitchell osteotomy and Wilson osteotomy are two popular methods for the treatment of hallux valgus, there are no studies directly comparing their results. Fifty-six patients (73 feet) who underwent a Wilson osteotomy and 30 patients (34 feet) who had a Mitchell osteotomy were followed for a mean period of 33.7 and 38.9 months, respectively. The results were comparable in terms of hallux valgus angle correction and first intermetatarsal angle correction, although symptomatic improvement was higher in the Mitchell group. Moreover, the incidence of postoperative metatarsalgia was significantly lower in the Mitchell group as compared to the Wilson group (11.8% vs 32.9%), while less time was required for the patients who underwent Mitchell osteotomy to return to work or normal activities postoperatively. The difference in symptomatic improvement, incidence of postoperative metatarsalgia and rehabilitation time was even more clearly in favor of the Mitchell group in patients over 55. The increased stability at the osteotomy site offered by the Mitchell osteotomy compared to Wilson osteotomy could be the reason why patients had a lower incidence of postoperative metatarsalgia and returned to their normal activities faster, thus giving a higher satisfaction rate.

The Mitchell distal metatarsal osteotomy for hallux valgus.
Seventy-two Mitchell distal metatarsal osteotomies for hallux valgus performed over a period of 10 years have been reviewed. Sixty-six (92 per cent) were graded as excellent or good. Retrospective radiographic analysis of 29 of these cases showed that the operation had reduced the intermetatarsal angles to within normal anatomical limits. No patient experienced a worsening of symptoms as a resu...

This study aimed to compare three current procedures namely Chevron osteotomy, Scarf osteotomy and McBride technique. Methods: In this study, 44 patients were included from 2010 to 2013. All patie...
متن کاملOblique Displacement Osteotomy for Hallux Valgus.
The standard operations for the correction of hallux valgus in the middle-aged are not entirely satisfactory when applied to the same condition presenting in adolescence. Most of these procedures, although they correct the deformity, interfere to some extent with the efficiency of the foot. This is of little importance in the older patient, who is unlikely to put heavy strain on the site of the...
متن کاملA Follow-up Study of Eighty-two Feet
Osteotomy of the neck of the first metatarsal bone has been practised for many years in the treatment of hallux valgus. Although various techniques have been described (Hohmann 1948 ; Mitchell, Fleming, Allen, Glenney and Sanford 1958), we are aware of only one detailed report of results (Mitchell et a!. 1958). This paper presents the results of osteotomy in eighty-two feet, and attempts to def...
